Abstract:

In the present study, attempt has been made to study the returns of input factors and their efficiency in silk cocoon production in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used to test the returns of input factors and marginal value of product was also computed to know the efficiency in input utilisation during the process of production. The result shows that there is constant return to scale in cocoon production and the elasticity coefficients are 0.30 for labour and 0.80 for silkworm disease free layings and was found significant at 5% level of significance. The MPL is 0.41 and MPK is 1.068 which indicates labour is inefficient utilised and ratio between marginal value of silkworm disease free layings and marginal cost of disease free layings is greater than unity which indicates efficiently use utilisation in cocoon production. The underutilized factor efficiency should be raised by shifting labour to other sectors or making them skilful by new techniques, so the dependency of labour on sericulture should be reduced or the efficiency in productivity of the labour will be enhanced. Shifting of labour is not so easy because this is family labour intensive industry and at the same time due to seasonality of employment in agriculture, sericulture provides them subsidiary employment.
