Variability of precipitation and temperature and their consequences on cereal production: The case of Khuzestan as the agricultural pole of Iran

Abstract:Among the climatic factors and elements, temperature and precipitation affect agricultural production more than others. In this study, the variability in temperature, precipitation, the cultivated area, and the production and yield of irrigated and rainfed cereal prodiuction were investigated in a 25- year period (2002-2003 to 2016-2017) in the province of Khuzestan as the agricultural pole of Iran. The temperature in the entire province shows an increasing trend with more severe conditions in the central and northern regions compared to other regions. Regarding the precipitation, it has a negative trend which is more intense in the southwest and less so in the northeast. The cultivated area under irrigated cultivation has been expanded in the midwest and southwest. Although the production shows improvement in all areas except the center, the yield has risen except in the northeast and south. The production and yield of rainfed cultivation has declined in the whole province except for the northeast.
