Abstract:

The present study was undertaken to find out the preferred food type and feeding intensity of freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, in outdoor culture system. In the first experiment, four food types viz. Chlorella vulgaris, Spirulina major, Scenedesmus obliquus, and Baker’s yeast were used. Initially, tanks (1000 L) were fertilized using ground nut oil cake (25%), urea (1%) and single super phosphate (0.5%) for algal growth and then rotifers were inoculated equally (10 nos. ml-1). At the end of the week, highest rotifer count was observed in tanks fed with C. vulgaris (180.33±2.18 nos. ml-1)followed byBaker’s yeast (132.00±9.03 indi. ml-1). In the second experiment, the food type with the highest rotifer production was used for further trials on feeding intensity (2 × and 3 × day-1). The highest rotifer count was observed in 3× feeding interval of C. vulgaris (252.33±10.1 indi. ml-1) compared to 2× (180.14±5.33 indi. ml-1). Ciliates posed serious threat, leading frequent crashes, in algal culture tanks. Hence, in third experiment, ciliates were effectively controlled by application of common purified salt at 60 g L-1 without affecting algal cell within 24 h. This study indicates the quantity and quality of food have significant role on mass production of B. calyciflorus.
