Abstract:

Crabs are decapods crustaceans of the family Portunidae. Crabs obtain carotenoids from an external sources like medium and food materials. Carotenoids have been proposed to be potent antioxidants, protecting membrane lipids from toxic peroxidation reactions. Detection and quantification of carotenoids most often depended on their distinctive spectral properties; the conjugated polyene structures of the compounds give those unique light absorption spectra and high molar absorptivity, and hence outstanding lower limits of detection. In the present study, carotenoids were extracted from the three spotted crabs collected from the South East Coast of India. The results revealed that carotenoid compounds were distributed a varied level in the carapace and muscle. Increasing variability was observed in carotenoid groups between individuals concerning age.The quantities of
carotenoids of hexane extract were determined by GC-MS and TLC, respectively. The experimental crab species seems to contain a comparable concentrations of carotenoids.
