Abstract:

Nanotechnology deals with the synthesis of materials and particles at nanoscale with dimensions of 1–100 nm. Biological synthesis of nanoparticles, using microbes and plants, is the most proficient method in terms of ease of handling and reliability. Citrus is one of the most important commercial fruit crops grown in all continents of the world, the fruits primarily used by juice processing industries while the peels are considered a waste material. These citrus peels has the rich source of essential oils. These oils have efficient antioxidant and insecticidal properties. However, using these oils are restricted because of technical obstacles such as their poor solubility in water and rapid rate of vaporization. Nanotechnology enables the formulation of the EOs into promising, efficient nanomaterials. These materials can be used in different fields such as water treatment, production of eco-friendly insecticides, and the food industry. The aim of this study is to synthesize nanoparticles from citrus fruit peel which is produced as waste material in citrus fruit processing industries. In this study, different citrus peel extracts obtained was used to synthesize nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were characterized using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The study result revealed that citrus peels
are the good candidate for nanoparticle production.
