Abstract:

It is widely accepted that good nutrition and health care are important for a child’s growth and development, and the period from birth to two years of age is a crucial “window period” for fostering optimal growth and development. One of the crucial key indicators of infant and young child feeding practices (IYCF) is starting of age appropriate complementary feeding. The health and nutritional status of children can be seriously threatened by delayed and unsuitable complementary feeding, which includes poor timing (too early or too late introduction of complementary foods), insufficient quantity and quality of food, and unsanitary practices. Knowing the appropriate age to introduce complementary foods is crucial for a child’s survival and well-being. This was a community-based, cross-sectional study carried out to ascertain  the knowledge  and  adherence  of complementary feeding practices among mothers having child aged 0 to 42 months. Mothers were interviewed using the infant and young child feeding questionnaire, the minimum dietary diversity (MDD), minimum meal frequency (MMF), and minimum acceptable diet (MAD) feeding indicators were included in interview schedule. Purposive stratified sampling method was used for equal distribution of sample in rural and urban ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) project of High Burden selected district of Uttar Pradesh. The mother’s knowledge and awareness regarding complementary feeding indicators were average. The majority of the women who participated in the study had no idea when to start complementary feeding. Therefore, there is an urgent need to address the gaps, socio-cultural hurdles and misconceptions that are pervasive in the society. Further, it is also crucial to take the required steps to assist mothers in rightly caring and nourishing of their child.
