Abstract:

Farmers engaged in agriculture sector hardly ever make enough money from cultivable farming to support their way of life and there is a dire need of allied  activities to support the farming system. Among the other livestock occupations, poultry farming occupies a pivotal position due to its greater potential in pushing up the economic growth rate of the country. The poultry management includes breeding, brooding, incubation, housing, rearing, feeding, poultry farm management and marketing. Every commercial venture face some hindrances during its operation and broiler poultry farms are no exception. These face a variety of issues, the major ones being poor veterinary care and disease outbreaks, leading to high mortality rate, subsequently leading to heavy losses. The present paper tends to examine the factors responsible for mortality of broiler chickens and the severity of each factor as per the experience of the broiler poultry farmers. The study is undertaken in 8 major districts of Punjab where the concentration of broiler poultry farms is maximum and 338 broiler poultry farmers are selected randomly. Garrett ranking technique is applied to rank the various factors that cause mortality in the broiler chickens. To encapsulate, by amalgamating all the findings, it is revealed that disease outbreak is the major reason for the fatality, followed by untimely vaccinations, climate change, improper health check-ups, improper litter management and improper brooding.
