Nutrition and food blogs are internet sites that document and deliver information regarding nutrition guidance, food recipes, and cooking. The number is escalating each day, but limited research has been conducted on these websites. The objective of this study was to examine nutrition-related blogs for the type of nutrition information published and audience reach of the topics, as measured by social media followers. A total of 500 blogs were selected using a purposive-snowball sampling approach via search engines/social media outlets. Nutrition topics were obtained from the last 100 articles of each blog. A panel of four nutrition researchers classified these topics into general categories. Social media following was obtained by recording the number of followers from all platforms associated with the blogs. Descriptive statistics were performed using frequencies of blogs. Mean followers of blogs’ social media platforms were calculated and presented in relation to categories of topics. A total of 190 identified topics were classified into 15 general categories. The most popular social media were Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Categories with the highest audience reach according to each platform were functional health (114,924 followers), supplements (56,377), and community nutrition (34,092), respectively. The three most frequently published specific topics were vegetables (224 blogs), COVID-19 and nutrition (222), and weight loss (204). Functional health, supplements, and community nutrition had the highest audience reach, according to social media followers. Future investigations should analyze the content of articles published in nutrition-related blogs in order to ascertain whether topics discussed are in agreement with scientific evidence.
