Abstract:

Adequate nutrition and health care of the child is significant for proper growth and development and it is well acknowledged that the period from birth to two years of life is a critical “window period” for the promotion of optimal growth and development. Complementary feeding is one of the important core indicators of Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices which needs to be initiated at the right age. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices of mothers regarding complementary feeding and its determinants and to study the impact of demographic factors on knowledge, attitude, and practices of complementary feeding practices among mothers. It was a community-based, crosssectional study conducted to investigate knowledge and compliance of complementary feeding practices among 300 mothers using systematic random sampling with probability proportionate to size in the Central Region of Uttar Pradesh. It was found that the knowledge of mothers was average regarding complementary feeding practices. In rural areas mean age of complementary feeding was delayed due to improper information, false beliefs and attitudes, illiteracy and low socioeconomic status, thus leading to malnutrition of the child. Hence, mothers should be educated properly regarding complementary feeding, foods, preparation, and practice to prevent malnutrition and improve the health status of the children
