Awareness of the presence of antimicrobial drugs in food among consumers in Jordan

Abstract:

The treatment of infectious diseases and undermining progressions in health and medicine is compromised due to the occurrence of antibiotic resistance. The study aimed to determine the level of knowledge among consumers about the presence of antimicrobial residues in foodstuff, health problems caused by antimicrobial residues in foodstuff and withdrawal periods for antimicrobial drugs used in farm animals in the Jordan University. The study employed a quantitative research design to analyze the collected data. The research sample was consisted of 2185 students and 320 employees; the research sample was collected using an online questionnaire. The level of awareness varied significantly (p<0.05) among the different educational levels, universities and colleges, marital status, and the type of work. These factors have a role in determining the level of awareness against antimicrobial residues. The proliferation and selection of antibiotic-resistant strains could be distributed to the environment through animal waste, improving the resistance reservoir that is present in the environmental microbiome.
