Potential of domestic tourist arrival to Lembah Bujang, Kedah from the archaeotourism perspective

Abstract:

This article focuses on the prospects of archaeotourism in Lembah Bujang (Kedah) to examine the pattern or trend of visitors who visit. This is because Lembah Bujang has the prospect to develop as one of the potential domestic tourism locations especially from the aspect of archaeotourism in this country. Nevertheless, to what extent has Lembah Bujang been developed to be utilised in line with the potential it has to develop as a destination that is capable of meeting the needs and preference of the tourists? Hence, in order to achieve that goal, the research methodology applied in this study is the use of qualitative and quantitative method. In addition to referring to primary and secondary sources in the library and archives, investigation in the field through questionnaires and interviews was also carried out to identify the prospects that have and have not been exploited. The study found that the pattern of tourist arrival to Lembah Bujang was from the Peninsular Malaysia. Among the locations that were the choice of visit are Lembah Bujang Archaeological Museum, Pengkalan Bujang Archaeological Site, and Sungai Batu Archaeological Site. Apart from staying at hotels, most tourists chose to stay at chalets. Among the purpose of visit was for sight-seeing while appreciating the remains of history and heritage; however, there were those who came to carry out research. The majority of tourists gave satisfactory feedback because of the adequate infrastructure facilities. In addition to increasing the tourism activities, the effort to promote Lembah Bujang as an archaeotourism location should be enhanced further.
