Abstract:Fibre quality is a paramount characteristic needed for recommendation of a cotton variety for the specific region. In lieu of this prime objective, different field experiments mainly on nitrogen nutrition, irrigation methods, planting geometry as well as the osmoprotectant application on various cotton cultivars were conducted at the Farm Area of Central Cotton Research Institute, Multan, during the two years 2009 and 2010. Observations on fibre quality characteristics viz., fibre length, strength, uniformity ratio and fineness were recorded. The results indicated that split nitrogenous fertilizer application, irrigation water applied by different methods and at various regimes as well as the plant spacing did not impart any significant effect on these quality traits. Furthermore, the results also elaborated that cultivars varied significantly regarding quality parameters and cv. CIM-573 recorded remarkable increase in fibre length, strength, uniformity ratio and fineness compared to other cultivars studied. Additionally, exogenously applied glycinebetaine proved to be a handy practice which showed positive impact on these fibre quality characteristics.
