Abstract:

In the present study, we report that ingestion of Ginkgo biloba ethanol extract and prostaglandin E1 significantly decreased serum TG, TC, LDL-c levels and increased HDL-c level in diabetic rats. In addition, Ginkgo biloba ethanol extract and prostaglandin E1 treatment significantly decreased LVEDP, and increased LVSP, +dp/dtmax and -dp/dtmax in diabetic rats. At last, Ginkgo biloba-ethanol extract significantly decreased myocardium MDA, NO2/NO3, NOS, iNOS level and increased SOD level in diabetic rats. Combination of Ginkgo biloba ethanol extract and prostaglandin E1 can play a synergistic effect on alleviating myocardium damage in diabetic rats. It can be concluded that Ginkgo biloba ethanol extract and prostaglandin E1 may provide a useful therapeutic option in the reversal of oxidative stress induced cardiac dysfunction in diabetes mellitus.
