Comparison of control logics in fresh produce container with atmosphere modification responding to real-time gas concentration

Abstract:

Several different Control Logics for opening and closing a gas diffusion tube attached to a fresh produce container were devised to maintain its headspace concentration within a beneficial range. Using a model container of spinach, these Control Logics were compared in the extent to which they suppressed the respiration of the produce by simulating the container atmosphere and the resulting respiration rate. The container system was controlled to maintain a gas concentration within an acceptable modified atmosphere range via real-time sensing of the headspace gas concentration, and manipulation of the opening and closing of the tube was found to be effective in suppressing the produce respiration activity. Initial active gas flushing of the container provided a stable container atmosphere profile resulting in a level of respiration comparable to that achieved by CA storage.
