Distribution and profile of alcohol consumers in Romania – A health related approach

Abstract:The present research aimed to investigate the distribution and profile of alcohol consumers in Romanian population. A population-based cross-sectional study was carried out on a random sample of 1106 Romanian subjects, stratified according to the size of the settlement and cultural area. One out of five Romanians usually drinks alcohol. Alcohol consumption is most common in Romanian urban areas. The dominant profile of alcohol consumers is male, 31-50 years, vocational education, medium and high occupational status, as well as medium or high income levels. Regarding Romanian alcohol consumers, most of them drink wine and beer, which may confer some health beneficial effects, when consumed with moderation. Policies such as regulating alcohol pricing and restricting alcohol marketing and sales promotion should be implemented in order to reduce the harmful consumption of alcohol.
