Abstract:

Plants and plantation are considered among the major work fields of landscape architecture. Today, exotic plants originated from foreign countries are used more commonly than native ones in landscape works. Plants chosen for landscape designing should have high quality and capable for adaptation to ecological conditions of the region they are to be planted in order to achieve a cost effective plant and facility management process. Use of exotic plants rather than native ones paying relatively high cost in landscape designs implemented in Turkey can cause negative ecologic and economic impacts. In the scope of this study, the rate of native woody plants used in urban landscape areas of Erzurum city was determined by mentioning about the advantages of the use of native plants in landscape architecture. The results of this study indicated that totally 89 native woody plant species can grow in Erzurum province, only 18 of which find places in landscape architecture works and 11 species are used in limited areas while 7 species can be seen more extensively.
