Constructing a CBR decision model for purchasing a town house combining individual demands and Feng Shui environment

Abstract:

The behavior of purchasing housing is a series of complex decision processes. Especially, when Eastern people purchase housing, Feng Shui is often taken into account when making decisions. This study has applied case-based reasoning (CBR) method to build a decision model for purchasing town houses, which includes Feng Shui evaluation. The first step was to retrieve proper relevant cases from the database based on buyers’ demands. Then, based on the Feng Shui evaluations, cases were revised in order to determine the fittest goals for purchasing town houses. 50 town house cases were used in this study for testing. Following to the CBR cycle process, buyers could efficiently obtain suitable case groups and avoid housing with bad Feng Shui environment. This model could efficiently reduce conflicts and problems caused by people’s unfamiliarity with purchasing town houses and the concepts of Feng Shui. Therefore, this decision model may be used as a tool, not only by ordinary people to analyze their choices when purchasing housing, but also by construction companies and designers to evaluate repair and reuse of houses.
