Abstract:

The objective of this study was to determine the phytotoxic level of the soil content of zinc extracted with 1 M HCl. This extractant is used in Poland for determination of concentrations of available micronutrients in soil (B, Cu, Mo, Mn and Zn) in order to diagnose their deficits and fertilization requirements. Two micro-plot experiments were set up on soil of the sandy loam texture with simulated Zn contamination at 4 levels of pH. The test plant was spring wheat. Using multiple regression analysis, prediction models were worked out to demonstrate the dependence between grain yield of wheat and the content of Zn in soil. The equations thus obtained, in which the soil pH represented a factor modifying the availability of Zn to plants, showed a high coefficient of determination R2 = 0.87. Threshold values were computed from these equations, assuming that a 10% decline in grain yield manifested the phytotoxic effect of Zn.
