Performance of bare and pelleted lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seeds exposed to phenolic foam

The phenolic foam is a substrate commonly used in the preparation of seedlings for hydroponic cultivation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the treatment of phenolic foam on germination, seed vigor and growth of lettuce seedlings in hydroponic system using bare and pelleted seeds. The experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with five treatments consisting of: (1) distilled water; (2) NaOH 0.01 M solution; (3) CaCO3 0.01 M solution; (4) Ca(OH)2 0.01 Msolution and KOH 0.01 M solution, with four replications. The variables evaluated were: first count, percentage of germination, emergence rate index, plant height, fresh weight of seedling with phenolic foam, fresh weight of shoot, dry weight of shoots and leaves number. The pelleted seeds showed higher germination and vigor than the bare seeds in phenolic foam. The treatment with KOH or CaCO3 provided better results using bare seeds, for pelleted seed, washing the phenolic foam with water was effective on seedling development.
