Abstract:

A field experiment was conducted for determination of pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) interference effect on corn yield and yield components in Tabriz, Iran, during 2006. Weed contamination periods of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 weeks and all-season weed interference were imposed on corn plants after establishment arranged as RCBD in three replicates. In all treatments, pigweed seeds were sown along with corn seeds at corn planting date. The results showed that all weed contamination levels had significant effects on corn plant height, seed number per cob and seed yield. The highest grain yield reduction belonging to all-season contamination and the minimum yield decrease obtained in control indicate the importance of pigweed control in cornfields during critical growing period. The early weed control led to lesser yield deterioration. Weed contamination during 6th week beyond corn establishment had no significant effect on yield and yield components. Meanwhile, it is highly recommended that weed control in cornfields must be done in the first six weeks period after corn establishment to minimize the weed population damage on corn yield and yield components.
