Abstract:

The increasing frequency of recreational activities has created the need for an efficient and accurate method for assessing residual stand damage due to recreational activities. Two sampling methods including fixed-area plot and line intersect sampling were compared for accuracy and efficiency in measuring damages to residual trees. Data were selected from mixed hardwood stands following recreational activities in Fandoughlou forests, Ardabil. The results indicated that line-intersect sampling consistently provided estimates similar to the results of a 100% survey (high accuracy). This method also took the least amount of time and effort for map lay-out and field line location (high efficiency). Line-intersect sampling as an easy and quick survey method is proposed to monitor forests under recreational activities in Fandoghlou forests or forests with similar properties.
