Abstract:

Heteropneustes fossilis, a type of freshwater fish found in India, is currently being investigated for its potential to treat reproductive tract infections
(RTIs) in women due to its antimicrobial properties. Methanol extract from Heteropneustes fossilis displayed the highest zone of growth inhibition,
followed by bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and fungal strains like
Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus, Candida parapsilosis, and Aspergillus nigar. The aqueous and hexane extracts exhibited the lowest zone of
inhibition against all bacterial and fungal strains. Heteropneustes fossilis is considered an excellent candidate for treating RTIs in women. The use of
Heteropneustes fossilis tissue as a disc is a novel and straight forward approach that can be employed to assess the fish’s antimicrobial activity before
further research is conducted.
