Comparative analysis of the effects of tillage depth and tractor speed on draft and power requirement for a 3-bottom disc plough under three soils

Abstract:

A comparative analysis of the effects of tillage depth and tractor speed on draft and power requirement of 3-bottom disc plough on clay loam, loamy and sandy loam soils were carried out. Tillage depths of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 cm and tractor speeds of 3.6, 5.4, 7.2, 9.0 and 10.8 km/h were used. The design of the experiment used were two factors, five levels factorial of Central Composite Rotatable Design of Response Surface Method. There was significant increase in draft and power requirement with increase in tillage depth and tractor speed at all levels of the treatments tested for the implement used. The draft and power requirement for the implement was highest on clay loam soil and lowest on sandy loam soil at all levels of the parameters tested. Draft and power requirement for the implement ranged from 1.51 to 8.66, 1.19 to 4.64 and 1.06 to 4.26 kN; 2.87 to 12.38, 1.94 to 6.58 and 1.64 to 6.00 kW on clay loam, loamy and sandy loam soils, respectively, when tillage depth and tractor speed were varied from 10 to 30 cm and 3.6 to 10.8 km/h, respectively.
