Abstract:

Genetically Modified Crops (GMCs) are a debate that refuses to die. It is an increasingly ticklish issue in India. The government is caught between strong proponents dominated by business houses and small farming community as well as the general public as strong opponents to the technology. Environment organisations, farmer unions, health professionals, activists and people around the country have raised strong opposition against the favourable stand of the government for this technology. Because of lack of valid long- term ecological, economic and biosafety data on GMCs even the scientific community stands divided on the issue. Under such circumstances assessing the perception of the common man becomes an arduous task. The current paper attempts to analyse and compare the awareness with the perception of the educated populace of the North-Western parts of India on the use of GMCs. Based on the scientifically validated research module and analysed using statistical tests, the research brought forth the weak science information and communication system in India, which has lead to a dubious perception over GMCs in the society.
