Abstract:

Biopolymers are suitable for food packaging applications and also an active research area worldwide due to biodegradable and eco-friendly nature of biopolymers. Biodegradable polymers viz., polyhydroxyalkaonates (PHAs) and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHBs), obtained from microbial fermentation, utilizing cost effective biomass sources, can be used for different applications in food packaging industry as PHB, derived from microbial source, is hydrophobic in nature. The present study reports the isolation of lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus sp. from different samples of curd from local Bilaspur market. Lactobacilli were grown in MRS broth and subsequent PHB production was under normal conditions. Further evaluation for its production potential under different parameters is going on. Extraction of polyhydroxybutyrate from microbial pellet was done by sodium hypochloritechloroform method. PHB production was measured by spectrophotometer method at 235 nm. It was observed that LB-3 strain was able to produce maximum yield of PHB that is 0.89 g/L using whey with 1% sugarcane molasses (WWSM) as organic carbon source. As Lactobacillus is edible bacterium, thus PHB produced by from these bacteria are more acceptable and safer in food packaging industry. PHB based biofilm can have possible safe application for food packaging as a substitute of synthetic polymers replacing them with a natural, environmental friendly and renewable resource.
