Abstract:

Salt-farming in Mumbai has been practiced for the past 1,500 years, around 5378 acres of land in coastal areas of this megacity has been utilized for salt production from the month of November to June. The entire salt production area has been divided into five different zones, from the reservoir to the crystallizers and each of it has enormous potential to boost the integrated mariculture practices of different organisms with varying environmental conditions. This paper attempts to reflect the dynamics of physico-chemical parameters of the aquatic ecosystem of salt-pans of Bhandup salt-works (Jenkin salt-work) and try to explore the possibilities of mariculture as part of the sustainable development of salt-pans. Among cultivable local species at salt-pans along with salt production include fishes like Oreochromis mossambicus, Gobius ocellatus, Boleopthalmus dussumieri, Mugil dussumieri, Mugil belanak and Clupea lile. Prawn species include Metapenaeus monoceros and hypersaline zooplankton Artemia salina, ciliate Fabrea salina and copepods.
