Insect pests and their predators of chilli (Capsicum annuum) plant inVirudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu (India)

Abstract:

The present study has been carried out on survey of insects in the selected agricultural fields (chilli field) of Vellaiyapuram village, Sivakasi Taluk, Virudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu, in a different period from November 2020 to April 2021. A total of eleven species of insects representing ten families belonging to eight insect orders were observed on chilli from November 2020 to April 2021. A total of 422 individuals were collected during the survey period. One pollinator, four predators, and six pests were identified in the chilli field during the study period. However, the insect pests occurred at a high percentage of 58% followed by predator with 29%, and pollinators 14%. Various diversity indices were calculated to understand the spectrum of insect in chilli field, and the results were given. The present investigation will be useful to develop and standardize the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to manage the pests of chilli crop.
