Abstract:

The contribution of streamflow and sediment yields in two branches of an agricultural watershed, Canagagigue Creek in Ontario, Canada, were assessed using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The model was evaluated for the streamflow and sediment data at two stations located in the western and eastern part of the Canagagigue watershed. During the calibration and validation period, the monthly Nash-Sutcliffe efficiencies (NSE) in predicting streamflow and sediment were 0.79 and 0.77, for the west part and 0.68 and 0.64 for the east part. The model was also used to assess the impact of future climate change on the distribution of streamflow and sediment yields in the west and east catchments. Results indicated that the annual flow is expected to increase significantly in the future thus influencing the increase in sediment yields in the stream. Results also revealed that the east watershed is expected to generate more sediment yields compared to the west watershed in the future due to climate change. A higher rate of increase in sediment yield during the next century for the eastern watershed compared to the west part was noted.
