Abstract:

Gua Jaya is located in Gua Musang, Kelantan, which is a limestone cave and it can be seen as a high-potential shelter site of prehistoric people. It can be proved based on early research and trial excavation which was conducted by Lamb and Peacock in 1963. From the results of the trial excavation, it has led to the discovery of 1500 pottery sherds and Peacock interpreted the site as a locus of pottery manufacture. In 1993, Adi Haji Taha has conducted a survey and found several pieces of pottery on the cave’s floor. Based on the survey conducted, he also sees Gua Jaya as a high-potential shelter site of prehistoric people. In 2017, researcher from the Institute of the Malay World and Civilization (ATMA) has conducted a preliminary scientifically and systematically archaeological excavation in Gua Jaya. Therefore, this paperwork focuses on the discovery of artifacts and eco-facts during the first phase archaeological research and excavation conducted in Gua Jaya and its association with environment and culture. Among the findings of the artifacts in the cave include lithic tools such as chopper tools, flaked tools and pottery fractions while eco-facts is like animal bones and fresh water snails. Stone tools found in Gua Jaya can be associated with Hoabinhian and Neolithic culture and the raw materials of the stone tools can be found in the vicinity of Gua Jaya area especially in the Nenggiri and Jenera River.
