Abstract:

The continuous improvement of environmental control strategies in greenhouses for protected cultures requires increasingly complex and articulated simulation models of microclimate paying particular attention to the role exerted in the energy exchange between the grown plants. For a long time research on glass greenhouses has focused its attention on this issue while the numerous mathematical models developed for simulating the microclimate in tunnel greenhouses covered with plastic film and without artificial heating, seldom consider the cultivated plants. Plants intercept solar radiation which passes through the cladding and exchange solar energy by convection with internal air and by irradiation with surrounding bodies but above all through transpiration which significantly influences the water balance in the greenhouse and energy exchange for ventilation. These phenomena assume particular importance in tunnel greenhouses covered with plastic film due to the limited use of artificial heating and the reduced size of the greenhouse. The small dimensions of the tunnel greenhouse may lead to a particularly difficult control with a lot of condensation. In this paper the results of research carried out at the University of Tuscia are shown in order to determine, through simulation mathematical models of the growth and energy exchanges of plants, the solutions that are able to control more efficiently the environmental conditions in presence of vegetation.
