Abstract:

The physical, chemical and morphological characteristics of Tamarix aphylla L. were evaluated in terms of their suitability for papermaking. The fibre length (0.84 mm) of T. aphylla was within the range of other hardwoods. The extractive content of the T. aphylla was 15.5%, and the α-cellulose content was 40%, both of which were within the range of other hardwoods. However, the ash content was higher for other hardwoods. The soda-AQ process was applied for pulping. The increase in the alkali content from 17 to 23% and the increase in cooking time from 60 to 120 min resulted in decreased kappa number, total pulp yield, reject pulp yield and lignin content, along with increased screened pulp yield and ash content. The increase in the alkali content and cooking time increased the burst, tear and tensile indexes from 0.5 to 1.1 KPa.m2/g, 1.6 to 3.6 mN.m2/g and 6.4 to 10.1 N.m/g, respectively, at the initial freeness. The increased burst, tear and tensile indexes also increased from 0.8 to 2.3 KPa.m2/g, 2.3 to 4.8 mN.m2/g and 26.1 to 67.3 N.m/g, respectively, at 30° SR, and from 1.5 to 2.9 KPa.m2/g, 3.0 to 5.7 mN.m2/g and 47.6 to 93.7 N.m/g, respectively, at 50° SR.
