Abstract:

The persistence patterns of dimethoate and profenofos as organophosphorus insecticides in cucumber and tomato fruits as well as their residues elimination performance of washing or home processing were studied. Residues of these insecticides were determined by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry. Results revealed that, the consumable safety time was 10 and 14 days after application of these insecticides on tomato and cucumber. This was found to be enough to reduce the residues to below the maximum residual limits (MRLs). However, dimethoate and profenofos appeared to have relatively longer persistence of t1/2 of 1.92 and 1.82 days on cucumber than 1.69 and 1.73 days on tomato fruits. Results indicated that complete removal of dimethoate from cucumber was achieved using potassium permanganate, tap water or acetic acid solution. They gave high removal performance from tomato fruits. All tested washing solutions gave moderate to higher removal performance of dimethoate and profenofos from vegetable fruits. Processing of tomato paste removed ≈100% of both insecticide residues. Pickling of cucumber removed 97.50 and 98.69% of dimethoate and profenofos after one week, respectively. Complete removing of both insecticides by cucumber pickling was achieved after two weeks.
