Strategies for the development of the biodiesel industry for countries with limited feedstock resources: Taiwan example

Abstract:

This study examines the obstacles faced by Taiwan and other countries with limited arable land and limited biofuel feedstock in developing a biodiesel industry. Strategies to overcome these obstacles are proposed, including using non-crop feedstock, developing new technologies for manufacturing biodiesel, establishing a quality assurance system, increasing the proportion of biodiesel in blended fuels and increasing the economic value of the byproducts. Innovative technologies for either the cultivation of energy crops or biodiesel production could not only enhance local biofuel production, but also become an important export. The study also suggests that the biodiesel industry could only be developed on a sustainable manner if adequate strategies are enforced by taking into account the indirect land-use impacts as well as life cycle greenhouse gas emissions.
