Abstract:

Extensive biological soil crusts (BSCs), which develop in the semi-arid water-wind erosion crisscross region of the Loess Plateau in China, have substantial hydrological effects. This study aims to assess the effects of biological soil crusts on soil air permeability. Ka values of soils with no crust, crusts formed over three years or seven years, and soil from which BSC had been removed, were measured using PL-300 meters, with four different water contents. The results showed that Ka was significantly reduced by BSCs, at any given moisture content, the air permeability was highest for soil with no crust, and lowest for the soil with a seven-year crust, and Ka decreased with increases in soil water content in all of the sampled soils.
