Abstract:

A hydroponic experiment was conducted to explore a new method to identify low- or high-Cd cultivars among four vegetables based on Cd speciation in plant tissues of seedlings at different growth stages. The Cd in extracts of 1 M NaCl and 0.6 M HCl was treated as easy moving fraction (EMF-Cd) and less active fraction (LAF-Cd), respectively. The results showed that genotype differences in Cd accumulations measured in the hydroponic seedlings were consistent with those in the soil-grown adult plants in all four leafy vegetables. It was proved that the concentrations of EMF-Cd and the values of EMF-Cd / LAF-Cd of 7- or 14-day-growth hydroponic seedlings can be used as an indicator to identify low- or high-Cd cultivars at early growth stage. The method is rapid, inexpensive and environment-friendly and is possibly suitable for most leafy vegetables. The results prove that traits of Cd speciation in plant tissue are associated with different abilities in Cd accumulation at cultivar level.
