Abstract:

This research deals with the analysis of land cover change before and after the establishment of Machiara National Park. Protected areas are established to conserve the available flora and fauna of the area and the purpose of this analysis was to check whether the objectives of establishing protected area are met. Satellite images were used to analyse land cover change before and after establishment of National Park, i.e. 1992, 1998 and 2009. Land cover change was detected inside MNP boundary as well as 1 km outside buffer to compare change pattern. The results show that there was a significant change in the vegetation of the area.
