Abstract:

Amongst the most important components of the global carbon cycle, soil atmosphere interactions in general and soil respiration in particular, are the least understood. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of different fertilization systems on soil respiration. We used an experimental design with five different treatments: Chemical fertilizer plus organic manure (NPK+OM), nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK), nitrogen and phosphorus only (NP), nitrogen and potassium only (NK), and no fertilizer as a control (CK). Changes in soil respiration were measured using the static chamber method and gas chromatography. Our results show highly significant changes in soil respiration among the treatments: NPK+OM > NPK > NP > NK > CK, with total carbon fluxes ranging from 29-302, 25-238, 25-185, 24-160 and 20-129 mg C m-2 h-1, respectively. We also observed an increasingly higher contribution of rhizosphere respiration to total carbon flux among the five treatments and an ascending order of NPK+OM > NPK > NP > NK > CK. Rhizosphere respiration and aerial biomass carbon of the five fertilizer treatments demonstrated the highest rate from pod stage to seed-filling stage.
