Valuation of forest resources based on literature search analysis on China status

Abstract:

Scientific and reasonable valuation of forest resources can provide quantitative reference of the importance of forest resources and promote effectively and sustainable utilisation of forest resources. Therefore, valuation of forest resources has been one of hot topics in forestry economy and ecological economy during certain period. Domestic researches on valuation  of forest resources were quantitatively investigated from the perspective of literature search. The results showed that from 1993 to middle of 2012, the researches on valuation of forest resources have covered most of the provinces and various ecological functions. These researches were classified into “sporadic” stage, “focus” stage, “hot” stage and “falling-back” stage. The valuation results were generally too high and showed that the values of forest ecosystem service were at least dozen times of the value of woodland and trees. On the basis of literature review, it is concluded although certain achievements have been made, there are still four aspects of problems, i.e. inconsistent theory of value, imperfect valuation method, double counting and unreasonable valuation results. To further clarify the economic meaning of forest resources value, improve valuation methods and promote valuation accuracy of the value of forest resources are possible to be hot and difficult issues for the future work.
