Impacts of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on the environment and human health

Abstract:

In this study, the potential impacts of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on the environment and human health are investigated. The study consists of 103 students and instructors whom participated in the survey in Aksaray Vocational School of Technical Sciences. It consisted of 14 questions excluding personal information such as age, occupation and level of education. The survey assessed the participants knowledge of GMOs as well as opinions on the potential risks of GMOs on environment and human health. The findings include: 83% of the participants stated that GMO-containing products are harmful, 40% of them expressed that the use of GMOs is harmful to environment, 53% stated that the use of GMOs would harm biodiversity, 33% of the participants expressed that the use of GMO is risky as it disturbs the natural balance and 43% of them stated that it is risky. It was concluded that 58% of the participants were of the opinion that the use of GMOs have negative impacts on human health. Also highlighted by the study is that countries like Turkey, which are rich in biodiversity, are under relatively high risk.
