Abstract:

Beans are considered as a good source of high protein content, complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber and some vitamins and minerals. The aim of the presented investigation was to estimate the diversity and quality traits on 47 local bean populations (LBP). The experiment was based on randomised complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The study of variation included the qualitative and photosynthetic pigments chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b) and carotenoids. The protein content (PC) showed a relatively wide range among the LBP. The mean value of PC was 21.67%. The genotype LBP (12) exhibited maximum PC at 23.83%, while LBP (27) had the lowest value of PC (17.81%). Polymorphic traits showed a large range of variability among the LBP’s. The present study revealed considerable amount of diversity among the local bean populations which could be manipulated for further improvement in breeding program.
