Abstract:

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is nowadays one of the major public health problems. In the management of the disease multiple factors are involved, one of the most important being lifestyle habits including here the regular, daily diet. Our study main aims were to assess the role of the Mediterranean diet in the disease management and also to compare the evolution of biologic and anthropometric parameters in patients attending three types of diets: Mediterranean (1500 kcal/day), conventional (1400 kcal/day) and no diet intervention in patients with T2DM. Two hundred twenty three (223) patients with T2DM and overweight were enrolled and divided in three groups according to the type of diet: 68 patients (32 men) adhered to Mediterranean diet, 88 patients (45 men) to conventional diabetes diet and 67 patients (34 men) did not change their diet habits. Improvements of glycemic control, in terms of both HbA1c value and the need of intensify the pharmacological therapy, as well regarding many cardiovascular risk factors (abdominal circumference in women, LDL cholesterol and systolic blood pressure) were observed in both Mediterranean and conventional diets compared to the cohort with no diet intervention. However, there are important components of cardiovascular risk in which the Mediterranean diet was superior to the conventional one: abdominal circumference (men), HDLc (men) and triglycerides. Considering the overall importance of the factors modified by the Mediterranean diet, as well the results obtained for the glycemic control and compliance to the diet, is recommended that this type of diet to be adopted by T2DM patients, and not only, even in early stages of the disease.
