Abstract:

Cyclocarya paliurus (Batal.) Iljinskaja (C. paliurus), commonly known as “sweet tea tree”, is a well-known edible and medicinal plant. The leaves of C. paliurus have been used as an ingredient in functional foods or dietary supplements in China. However, there is a lack of comprehensivecompositional data regarding the nutrient content of this plant. The proximate composition, amino acid and fatty acid profiles in the leaves of C. paliurus were investigated for the first time in the study. The leaves of C. paliurus contained 46.41% total dietary fiber, 9.84% moisture, 19.52% protein, 6.38% crude lipid and 7.75% ash, respectively. The C. paliurus leaf protein contained seventeen amino acids with high concentrations of phenylalanine (1928.1 mg/kg), leucine (1581.2 mg/kg), threonine (1270.3 mg/kg) and arginine (1228.2 mg/kg). Compared with the amino acid profile recommended by FAO/WHO, the protein was of medium quality. Seventeen fatty acids were found in C. paliurus leaves and saturated fatty acids were most abundant (61.32%). Palmitic acid was the dominant fatty acid, followed by oleic acid, docosadienoic acid and stearic acid.
