Information and communication technologies – Support technologies for rural sustainable development in the European Union

Abstract:This paper proposes an analysis of the contribution of new information technologies, with reference to their quality of being calm technologies, to improving life quality and environmental protection, the main objectives of sustainable development. To this end we consider a conceptual delimitation of the idea of sustainable development, an overview of the evolution of the concept of sustainable development for the past 50 years within the European Union, an outline of the non-aggressiveness of hybrid technologies resulting from the integration of information and communication technologies with traditional technologies generating sustainable development, and a systematization of the main reasons which national, regional and international institutions should take into account when establishing strategies, policies and specific measures to reach the targets imposed by sustainable development.
