Abstract:

As a key environmental factor, location influences largely plant growth and development, as well as chemicals metabolism in plant. The objective of this study was to determine the diversity for the location effect on the content and profile of alkaloid in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) leaves within a collection of five main cultivars in China grown at different sites. Significant differences were noted in the contents of total and individual alkaloids between respective two sites for each cultivar tested. Moreover, variations of alkaloids contents in tobacco leaves were mainly influenced by cultivar and cultivar × site interaction effects together. In addition, the positive and exceedingly significant correlations between each pair of total alkaloids and three top concentrations alkaloids (nicotine, anatabine and nornicotine) provide a potential approach to acquire our expect effects that decreased their contents at the same time in tobacco breeding. The possible relationship between alkaloid profile and aroma type is also briefly discussed. Taken together, these results suggest that location factor plays an important role in alkaloid metabolism and accumulation in tobacco leaves.
