Abstract:

The purpose of the study was comparison of heavy metals in the soil between north and south regions of the Tianshan Mountains. Twenty-two soil samples were collected from Hami. The heavy metal concentrations in soil were different for north and south regions of the eastern Tianshan Mountains. Mean concentrations of Cu, Zn and Cd were higher than the background values of these elements in soils. On average, Cu was approximately equal with the soil element background in the south and wass 1.47 times higher than the soil element background in the north. Mean concentrations of Zn were approximately equal in the north and the south. On average, the Cd concentration was higher than the soil element background in the north and south and was 1.84 times higher than the soil element background in the north. Pb, Cr and Hg were less concentrated than the soil element background. Cd comes primarily from chemical fertilizers, pesticides and other agricultural chemicals. The study area is neither characterized by mass transport nor large-scale industrial activities. All eight heavy metals except Hg and Pb have strong relationships with each other.
