Abstract:

Owing to the vital influence of the complexity of hydrodynamic field adjacent to Xiangxi Bay (XXB) on the water environment, and to protect the ecological environment of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) tributaries bay, it’s of major essentiality to acquire development and progression of hydrodynamic field of the XXB. It’s difficult for filed observations to obtain the hydrodynamic field of the whole bay, so the numerical modeling is aimed at predicting the basic trends of the temporal and spatial variation of the hydrodynamic field after the normal operation of the TGR. Simulations demonstrated that the operation of TGR had great influence on the water velocity in the bay; and the intrusions of density currents induced by water temperature occurred throughout the year. Furthermore, a typical stratified bidirectional flow formed with the effect of the density current; simultaneously, in the dry period, bottom water in the estuarine region plunges towards the upstream of the XXB, and in delivery period and discharging period the density currents are restricted to surface water in the estuarine region and middle stream, moreover, the density currents expands and in addition to prevailing throughout the whole bay until the impoundment period. The numerical modeling is a valid tool in the prediction of the hydrodynamic field in estuary, as a valuable tool in understanding the development and progression of density currents and the influence of scheduling on the hydrodynamic characteristics in the XXB of the TGR, therefore, this work could provide helpful supports for nutrient transportation and ecological environmental evaluation.
