Abstract:

Dietary intervention is the successful strategy to protect human body from health problems linked to oxidative stress. Currently, medicinal plants are widely utilized for various purposes as antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidants according to their components. In the present study, the well diffusion methods were carried out to asses antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extracts of seeds of thirteen medicinal plant species, which are traditionally used in folk medicine in Saudi Arabia. In addition, their antioxidant potentials have been determined by using linoleic acid system, DPPH radical scavenging assay and total phenolic contents. The results exhibited that black cumin (Nigella sativa) seed was the highest antimicrobial agent, while sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seed was the lowest one. The inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation results indicated that radish (Raphanus sativus) and onion (Allium cepa) seeds have effective antioxidant constituents. Furthermore, sunflower and flax (Linum usitatissimum) seeds were the strongest free radical scavengers compared to the other selected seeds.
