Abstract:

Efficient N-fertilizer management can decrease production costs and reduce the risk of environmental pollution. Field experiments were conducted to study the effects of different amount of N-fertilizers on growth, yield and nitrogen content of white radishes (Raphanus sativus L.) in Southern China. The N-fertilizers at the rates of 0, 60, 120, 180, 240 kg ha-1 were applied under the field conditions. There was no significant difference in the number of leaves per radish plant. The highest root diameter, length and root weight were observed from the treatment of 240 kg N ha-1. Total nitrogen and nitrate content of the fresh roots increased with the increasing the nitrogen doses. Excess nitrate content was observed with the increase in N application rate up to 120 kg N ha-1 at each site. Therefore, in integrating root yield and the nitrate accumulation, it is advisable to set the optimal N application rate at 120 kg N ha-1 for the crop production and quality of radish.
