Occurrence of viruses infecting spinach in Western Anatolia of Turkey: The first field survey report

Abstract:The survey was conducted to determine the status of spinach-infecting viruses on the important growing areas of spinach in the two provinces of Turkey in the years of 2008 and 2010. For this purpose, 192 spinach plant samples with distortion, curling of leaves, chlorotic, mosaic, interveinal yellowing on leaves and stunting symptoms or without any symptoms were collected. In result of RT-PCR tests, beet necrotic yellow vein benyvirus (BNYVV), cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV), tobacco mosaic tobamovirus (TMV), beet Western yellow luteovirus (BWYV) and turnip mosaic potyvirus (TuMV) were detected in samples collected. The viruses were found in only 63 specimens. BNYVV, CMV and TMV were found in 28, 29 and 3 of plant samples, respectively. BWYV, SpLV and TuMV were present in one sample. Moreover, mixed infections were detected in 3 samples. This study is important for being the first study about the identification of viruses infecting spinach in Turkey.
