Effect of composted sewage sludge with organic garbage on planting watercress in red soil

Abstract:

The application of compost of sewage sludge with organic garbage to red soil was conducted to plant watercress. The yield of watercress (aboveground part, on dry weight basis), the total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK) and selected heavy metal contents in soil and plant tissue were studied through pot-scale experiments. The results showed that the addition of compost could significantly promote the dry weight yield of watercress. In addition, the contents of TOC and TN in the soil increased dramatically after 60 days of planting but the content of TP decreased. TK in the soil showed different variation trends with different compost addition rates. Moreover, the accumulation behaviors of heavy metals in soil and in plant tissue were studied, the contents of heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Cd, Pb, Cr) were lower than the allowable limits of China Standards.
